What is an electronic cigarette?
An electronic cigarette is a device which allows you experience all the pleasures of smoking, without all the nasty health implications. It mimics the look, feel and taste of a real cigarette, but only emits nicotine vapour instead of harmful smoke. The best thing about electronic cigarettes is that they are not banned indoors so you can legally smoke them in pubs, clubs and other places where cigarettes are banned!
Whenever the user inhales, a tiny vapouriser turns a small amount of liquid nicotine into nicotine vapour. This nicotine vapour gives you an instant hit, as opposed to nicotine gum or other stop smoking aids. A small glowing light at the end of the electronic cigarette glows gently when the user inhales as well. This makes the electronic cigarette look like a real cigarette.
Why choose an electronic cigarette?
As someone who used to smoke “normal” tobacco cigarettes but now uses electronic cigarettes I think I can tell you quite a bit about the benefits of an electronic cigarette over a tobacco one. Although the taste was slightly different, the benefits are tremendous:

Are electronic cigarettes safe?
Normal tobacco cigarettes contain more than 4000 different harmful chemicals. According to the Cancer Research UK site, some of them are:
- Tar – a mixture of dangerous chemicals
- Arsenic – used in wood preservatives
- Benzene – an industrial solvent, refined from crude oil
- Cadmium – used in batteries
- Formaldehyde – used in mortuaries and paint manufacturing
- Polonium-210 – a highly radioactive element
- Chromium – used to manufacture dye, paints and alloys
- 1,3-Butadiene – used in rubber manufacturing
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – a group of dangerous DNA-damaging chemicals
- Nitrosamines – another group of DNA-damaging chemicals
- Acrolein – formerly used as a chemical weapon
There is ongoing testing and research being done on electronic cigarettes. Last year, toxological tests were performed on them and they were found to be much less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.
Since electronic cigarettes are such a popular product, many rogue companies have been quick to capitalize on that and have been flooding the market with cheap Chinese imitations. These imitations are untested and potentially hazardous to your health so it is not recommended that you buy them!
